Precision Machine Technology
30 weeks, 612 hours

Machining is part of the Engineering and Manufacturing Industry, this program develops the fully qualified journey level Machinist who has the ability to manufacture high precision “prototype” parts out of a wide variety of materials, using all types of conventional or Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machine tools; ability to estimate the work and plan the Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) processes from the Computer Aided Design (CAD); program the CNC machines, develop holding fixtures, special tools and do own set-ups; work as individual, as a team, or with engineer. Apprentices will also receive Environmental, Health and Safety (ES&H) instruction and training related to the work assignments and tasks to be performed.

This hands-on course will cover a vast array of topics in training and producing a true modern day machinist. provides training in programming, setup and operation of computerized numerical controlled machines. Instruction will be given for both CNC mill (vertical machining center) and CNC lathe (turning center). Students will also learn measurement, materials and safety as well as job planning, benchwork, and layout as well as learn various grinding and drill press operations. Students will also learn fundamental quality control skills.

Students who complete the course will be able to:

  • Setup, operate and troubleshoot various production problems on CNC machine
  • Conduct tool change activities and operational sequences
  • Write specific programs for CNC machines
  • Calculate speeds and feeds for the machining process
  • Verify and edit a CNC program on an actual machine tool
  • Manufacture parts per print in a machine shop environment
  • Inspect various parts and be familiar with various inspection equipment
  • Read and interpret blue prints
  • Know GD&T

This hands-on course is supplemented by Lab shop training at our school’s machine shop. It provides training and mastering knowledge in CNC manufacturing technology. This course is intended for individuals who are willing to deepen their knowledge and acquire shop habits on metal cutting CNC machinery: CNC Turning Centers and CNC Machining Centers. Quality Control (QC) is a vital part of every manufacturer's operations. Without measurable processes to ensure a customer's needs are met, most companies would face difficulty maintaining and improving the quality of their products and services.

These comprehensive studies take place in the classroom and students are instructed at the machines to manufacture parts specially designed for this hands-on course.

Students will become OSHA, MSSC and NIMS certified as well as receiving a machinist certification from Symbol.

Job Titles: QC Inspector, QC Technician, CNC Machinist, Tool and Die machinist, Programmer, or other manufacturing positions that require in-process inspection, programming, or print reading skills.
